1. AJANTA ELLORA CAVES

Maharashtra Being one of the most popular caves of India, Ajanta Ellora Caves are primarily known for their art and legends. Located in the Aurangabad district of the state of Maharashtra, the Ajanta caves are 29 in total and were carved out in the time period between 2nd century BC and 6th century AD whereas the Ellora Caves are more extended and date back to the period between 6th and 11th Century AD.These hand-made caves were built and underwrote by the Indian rulers of respective time periods and are almost buried by thick forests all around.



 

2. ELEPHANTA CAVES

Mumbai The 'City of Caves', on an island close to the city of Mumbai, the cave features a collection of rock art linked to the cult of Shiva.The small island is scattered with various ancient archaeological leftovers that became the only available testaments to its glorious cultural past. These archaeological remains exhibit signal of profession from as early as the 2nd century BC. The rock-cut Elephanta Caves were built about the mid-5th to 6th centuries AD. The most significant among the caves is Cave 1, which measures 39 metres from the front entrance to the back.


 

3. BHIMBETKA CAVES

Madhya Pradesh Located 46 km south of the city of Bhopal, Bhimbetka caves are an amazing sentinel to the prehistoric art and architecture of India. The finding of Bhimbetka caves has certainly revealed the sluicegate of the immense admiration of the area of Bhimbetka. The entire region sprinkles with caves, more than 600 in number. Dappled in a coppice of teak and sal, among rock-strewn cliffs, they discover armament as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.Some of these caves also exhibit reserved paintings that crisscross various epochs. There are enchanting rock paintings that traverse back to the Paleolithic, Mesolithic and Neolithic eras decorating these caves.



 

4. UDAYGIRI CAVES

Odisha Udayagiri and Khandagiri Caves have inherited their names, due to their location on two hills, Udayagiri and Khandagiri. Referred to as Kumari Parvat in Hathigumpha writing, the two caves look each other across the road. Once here, tourists can discover a lot in various these decorated carved caves. The legend mentions that during the reign of King Kharavela, most of these caves were carved out as residential chunks for the Jain monks.



 

5. TABO CAVES

Himachal Pradesh Several centuries ago the crags above the antique Tabo monastery have been excavated out by various caves – Tabo Caves. These artificial cavities assisted and still acted as dwellings for monks during the severe winters of the mountains.It is not precisely known who and when the building such caves started – but it is believed that caves are pretty old. Tabo is not the only place with such caves in Spiti valley – there are lot more caves upstream.
