GATE is basically a national-level examination managed and conducted in eight zones across the country by the GATE Committee which is comprised of faculty members from IISc, Bangalore and other seven IIT’s on behalf of the National Coordinating Board, Department of Education, Ministry of Human Resources Development.

Over the past years, the committee has allowed international students to appear for GATE exam. These countries are Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Ethiopia, and United Arab Emirates.
 

# Exam format

The exam is made up of 65 multiple choice and numerical questions that need to attended in 3-hour time duration. GATE Score remains valid for a period of 3 years.

 

# Why GATE exam?

The best thing about this exam is that it allows students to seek admission in different renowned PG programs in world-class institutions like IITs and IISc such as -

  • MTech (Master of Technology)
  • Doctor of Philosophy

# GATE Exam Eligibility

The eligibility criteria for the GATE exam is given below -

  • Bachelor’s degree students in Final Year of Engineering / Technology / Architecture (4-year program after 10+2) programs
  • Master’s degree students Final Year in any branch of Science / Mathematics / Statistics / Computer Applications or equivalent

Pre-final year students are not qualified to appear in GATE exam. There is no age boundary for students eligible to appear in GATE exam.

# GATE Questions                                                         

The exam questions are primarily sourced from the wide-ranging topics related to engineering. They can be classified as follows-

  • Engineering mathematics questions constituting 13-15 marks
  • General aptitude questions with a value of 15 marks
  • Core questions carrying 70-72 marks

General aptitude questions (general for all streams) test analytic skills in verbal ability and numerical capability.

 

# GATE Exam Test Scores

GATE Exam score is typically released the 3rd week of March (nearly 40 days from the exam date). The GATE scorecard is made up of the following -

  • GATE Score (on a scale of 1000)
  • Marks (out of 100)
  • Qualifying marks for General, OBC and SC/ST/PwD categories.
  • All India Rank
  • Number of candidates appeared in the paper

     

# Financial Support

In a bid to promote post graduate programs in the country, GATE students are provided a Scholarship/ Assistance ship, where the students are paid INR 11,800 per month by the MHRD so as to give financial support to the candidates during their program.
