Watch a boat race in Kerala

Kerala

Watching a boat race in Kerala is an exhilarating experience that offers a glimpse into the vibrant culture and tradition of the region. These races, known as Vallam Kali in Malayalam, are held annually during the monsoon season, primarily from July to September.

The most famous among these races is the Nehru Trophy Boat Race, held in the Punnamada Lake in Alappuzha (Alleppey). This event attracts thousands of spectators from around the world. The boats used in these races, called snake boats or chundan vallams, are long, narrow, and graceful, powered by a large team of rowers who paddle in perfect synchronization to the rhythm of traditional songs and chants.

The atmosphere during a boat race is electric, with crowds cheering enthusiastically as the colorful boats slice through the water at incredible speeds. Spectators line the banks of the river, cheering for their favorite teams and enjoying the festive atmosphere filled with music, food, and cultural performances.

In addition to the Nehru Trophy Boat Race, there are numerous other boat races held across Kerala, each with its own unique charm and history. These races provide a wonderful opportunity to witness Kerala's rich maritime heritage and to immerse oneself in the excitement of this traditional sport.
